I’m told that it’s actually ‘orjus on pois’ (slavery is away), which I have to admit makes far more sense in context. Good to know that Finns don’t have anything against cheese at Christmas.

Anyway I’m pretty sure that O Holy Night (Oi Jouluyö) probably doesn’t go ‘oi, juuston pois’ (”oh, cheese away” (?)) but even on a second listening that’s what it sounds like.

Not to mention that half the time it’s the person who’s repeating those meaningless platitudes whose responsibility it is to do those reviews, and they’re patently not doing so.

And the thing is that even if this is true, it’s very clearly the case that people are not using them responsibly. And how do you exclude that circumstance?

Well, this is precisely my point. You started out by saying you don’t understand why any programmers are not positive about the tools. Answer: because not everybody has had the same experiences with them as you have. You’ve apparently been impressed by the results; this isn’t a universal experience.

I have and they weren’t.

I don't see why this should ever be the reviewer's problem.
December 12, 2025 at 4:38 PM
Also, maybe it's just me but I don't feel like I write that much boilerplate. Certainly not enough that I'd pay for a tool to fix that generally. On a rare occasion I might write a tiny script to generate some code in a loop. More like 5min/year savings.

But depends on tech stack, of course.

Alternatively, it produces code I don’t understand, so I spend that saved time understanding it instead. Perhaps not worse, but certainly not an improvement.

When you factor in the additional costs, it doesn’t feel worthwhile at all.
December 12, 2025 at 7:59 AM
Well, I’m not sure it ever has saved me any time at all. Again, anecdotal, but what I seemed to find was that it took pretty much just as long to get it right as it would have done if I had just written it myself.
December 12, 2025 at 7:59 AM
It’s anecdotal, but my experience is that it simply is not a useful tool. It hasn’t enabled me to do anything I couldn’t do myself; and the experience is worse. It would take a lot to justify the downsides.

Not even prescription: I’m pretty sure even a packet of 16 paracetamol from any supermarket would be extremely unhealthy if you took it all at once. (I’m not sure what the actually fatal dose is, admittedly.)

posted this on mastodon a little while back but i'm trying to make a habit of blogging about stuff when i figure out how to do a thing, particularly when there were no good search results and i had to put together an answer from several sources

I swear Excel could do that in 1997
