The alethiometer has four needles in total: the three ones that can be moved to point to different symbols and a long thin out that moves by Dust. So the illustration is correct.

what grinds my gears is the fixation on Will. Will this and Will that and the return of Will and will Will come back. And the occasional trashing on Malcolm.

We have a vast metaphorical world to relish in and there is much fixation on that. We do indeed need to find the imagination again.
