We summarized our analysis of NIH-funded neuroscience research: study sections dominated by experts in animal-based research, correlating with fewer funded non-animal projects and underscoring the need for diverse expertise in review groups. doi.org/10.1101/2025...

Predominance of animal-based expertise may bias NIH neuroscience grant review: A pilot study with implications for non-animal methodologies
Despite increased enthusiasm for research methods that can replace the use of animals, the numbers of animals used in science and the funding for animal-based projects remain high. Our work addresses ...

By enabling stronger, more complex, & biologically compatible constructs that support vascularization & tissue-specific cell growth, this technology could dramatically advance #organoid development & patient-specific #tissueengineering.

3D Hybrid Bioprinting for Complex Multi-Tissue Engineering
3D bioprinting has revolutionized tissue engineering, enabling intricate, physiologically relevant constructs unattainable with conventional techniques, yet it remains limited in integrating soft and ...

"Apart from the retirement of research chimpanzees initiated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) a decade ago, the move would mark the first time a U.S. agency has ended its in-house nonhuman primate program."

Let’s make sure it’s not the last.

The rhesus & pig-tailed macaques have been used in experiments attempting to develop new treatments for HIV, hepatitis, & other infectious diseases.

But as SAO has covered, those efforts have largely failed:

Here's what SAO is thinking about on this #WorldAIDSDay. 100% of HIV vaccine candidates developed using animals have failed in human trials. Since only humans contract #HIV and develop #AIDS, this research must be based in human biology.

"There seems to be an explicit desire to stop nonhuman primate research in toto," a high-level CDC source told @david-grimm.bsky.social.

And for good reason ⬇️

The US hasn't*** undertaken this kind of survey (typo)

The bottom line? The UK is now taking the lead in this much-needed paradigm shift.

The ball is in NIH's court. Now that the shutdown is over, let's hope to see promises put into action.

The US has undertake government-initiated surveys on the public opinion's on animal experimentation. Glad to see the UK will begin this again. Globally, public support for this practice has been dropping for decades.

Accountability will also be key. We don't promises alone. We want lives saves.

Existing animal protocol review (both in the UK & UK) has been woefully incomplete without experts in non-animal methods being able to weigh in on decisions. IACUCs, AWERBS, & similar bodies simply don't have the expertise to know if a hypothesis could be answered, or slightly modified, to fit NAMs.

LOVE the promise of increasing support for data-driven biology. There is SO much data out there waiting to be mined & correctly organized to spark discovery.
