They could try but Stranger Things has the benefit of being a story people aren't familiar with. So far most aren't interested in a reheated version of a story that was already told successfully through 8 films and if Rings of Power has shown us anything a platform pushing a big IP isn't guaranteed.

If the Netflix deal doesn't fall apart during the lengthy regulation process, it's still at least two years from anything of consequence. So HBO could still end up falling on their face well within that time.
