Not sure why it came up when I was searching for an 18c novel, but it's amazing that the Five Find-Outers and Dog series has been translated into Russian

Word of the day: raccourci. "En raccourci" can mean "foreshortened (visual arts)" or "in summary." Or "shortcut," like an Excel keyboard shortcut. And apparently in one context "wrinkle."

Mishra's (ironic?) ideal of a politically engaged writer is not someone who changes minds or builds coalitions, but someone who forfeits physical comfort for the moral comfort of saying "a pox on all your houses, I have nothing to do with this."

Plenty of deflating the liberal reader's political and cultural heroes—Salman Rushdie, David Foster Wallace, JFK, Biden, Anne Applebaum, Timothy Snyder. I didn't know about Robert Frost's poetry for Kennedy's inauguration, and the excerpt Mishra chose sounds so bad I wasn't sure it was real:
