Today is the 108th anniversary of the Bolshevik seizure of power. There were critics on the Left from day one, most notably Karl Kautsky. My new book tells the story of how Lenin's coup d'etat led to the rupture between the socialist & communist movements. Learn more here: bit.ly/47LYp90

"Mamdani will win the support of liberals and working-class voters. But if he wants to take his progressive vision further, he needs the support of the city’s Jewish community too — and to get that, he needs to listen to their concerns." Read my full column here: www.ericlee.info/blog/zohran-...

It was the final battle of the Second World War in Europe, lasting weeks beyond V-E Day. And both sides wore the same uniform. Learn more about the Georgian uprising on the Dutch island of Texel here: www.nightofthebayonets.com

"Israelis are increasingly turning to tactics like ongoing, mass street protests that are reminiscent of the 'Arab Spring' at its height. Maybe an 'Israeli Spring' could bring down the most right-wing, corrupt and unpopular government the country has ever known." More here: bit.ly/enough-of-bibi

"As Donald Trump has embraced the foreign policy of 'America First' ... Europe needs to prepare for a world in which the United States has withdrawn back into itself. It is 1940 and blitzkrieg has been unleashed." Read the full article: www.ericlee.info/blog/why-the...

"Putin tells Lukashenko what to do, and Lukashenko does what he is told. Putin is playing the same role in Belarus as the tsars did in the 19th century, ensuring that democratic revolutions in countries bordering the Russian empire are swiftly crushed." Read more: www.ericlee.info/blog/belarus...

In 1940, future Labour Party leader Michael Foot, wrote a blistering attack on those who appeased aggression in Europe - the "guilty men". 85 years later, another Munich conference, and more guilty men. My column this week: www.ericlee.info/blog/munich-...

Peter Gay's 1985 book makes a compelling case for historians to use psychoanalysis, to make it part of their tool kit. I was convinced. My short review is here: www.ericlee.info/blog/review-...

This could have been a great, short introduction to the life of Stalin. Unfortunately, it isn't. I explain why in my short review. bit.ly/shaw-stalin

There aren't many books that I have read more than once, but this is one of them -- a short account of the life of Lenin's favourite proletarian and Okhrana super-spy Roman Malinovsky. Here's why I keep coming back to it: www.ericlee.info/blog/review-...

The Mind of Stalin is a surprisingly interesting, well-written book -- and just 143 pages long. Some of it is a bit of a stretch, but much of it quite interesting - and relevant to my current research. My review is here: bit.ly/mindofstalin

I'm reading some of the older biographies of Stalin, written in the 1930s and 1940s. The idea that the Soviet dictator had been a secret agent of the tsarist police was commonplace. Here's my very short review of I Knew Stalin: www.ericlee.info/blog/review-...

This is how history books used to look, back in 1940. No footnotes, no bibliography, no index. Life was easier for historians then. Read my short review of a biography of Stalin written by Eugene Lyons, the first Western journalist to interview him: www.ericlee.info/blog/review-...
