Writing on the Black & White experience growing up in Post-Civil Rights Era Mississippi
This past weekend, I held a vial of Mississippi red clay from the site where Bootjack and Red were lynched in 1937.
Memory matters. Truth-telling is a form of justice.
Read about the healing ceremony I attended:

I will be damned if I allow a bunch of Confederate-waving January 6th apologists give the American people a lecture on flag waving.

There is ZERO reason to enter an argument about patriotism with people who still worship traitors to America 150+ years later.

They. Are. Breaking. The. Law.

I saw #Sinners today and would love to design a college history elective around this movie!

A conspiracy theory is emerging that Harriet Tubman was a myth & that the Underground Railroad was a literal underground tunnel. 🤦‍♀️

This is what happens when we erase, dilute, or politicize U.S. history. We leave space for nonsense to grow, which ultimately leads to oppression & division. #harriet

I’m solo camping at the moment. As I sit around my campfire drinking wine, I want to reach out to my favorite authors. Anyone else do really nerdy things under the influence of nature & wine?

Researching what it was like growing up in Mississippi—and sometimes that means catching up with an old friend, poolside, over wine. 🏊🏽‍♀️🍷

We met in 2nd grade (sharing chickenpox 💀), and decades later, we’re unpacking memories of our shared history—what we saw, what we didn’t see.

#ChatGPT has really changed my meal planning game. I joined River Queen Greens CSA program & pick up my vegetable haul every Tue. Then I update ChatGPT on what was in my order, remind them of what proteins, pantry staples, etc I have & ask for some meal ideas. Can't emphasize enough GAME CHANGER!

It’s wild that the REAL ID Act was passed in 2005; twenty years ago & is just now going into effect. Think about what this means for the SAVE Act? Will it take 20 years voters to reregister to vote? Or will some folks be grandfathered in like Jim Crow days?

On recommendation of @imaniperry.bsky.social, I’m reading _The Barn_ by Wright Thompson. I’m 50% in & it is so well done! It’s the history, told by a local, of the community & families that were & are connected to the Emmett Till & the barn where his murder took place. #MSinBlackandWhite

We have yet to receive adequate information from Homeland Security about the recent news of Minnesota students being detained by ICE.

Snatching up students who come here legally to work hard and get an education does not make you tough on immigration.

We need answers.

I understand folks are planning to do an economy opt out day on Feb 28, but I’m just going to do my best to opt out for the unknown foreseeable future as much as I can.

The bus boycotts were 13 months, not 1 day.

Kendrick Lamar’s half time performance reminded me a lot of Childish Gambino’s “This is America” video. Both were incredibly cerebral & should be studied for the political art.
