I'm a little tired of the wink wink nudging and "everyone's gonna use it!". Use it, but give consumers the right to know.

If that scares you because you're isolating a market, then good.

If it has led to negligible gains in efficiency, why are they even still using AI?

Seems unnecessary, even if you look at it agnosticly of the morality of AI use in art.

The jury currently is only full of journalists isn't it? I think their point is expanding the panel to people who also WORK in games, who he is having these conversations with.

The Academy for example isn't just journalists, it's everyone of varying roles in the film industry.

I think my main point here, is that E33 is a love letter to the genre so it pulls mechanics from everywhere, so it's kind of a head scratcher when it's billed as setting itself apart and I think parries nullifying damage can kind of lead you into not worrying about your stats and planning ahead.

I guess where we disagree is that putting a parry in a game, RPG or not, makes it stand apart. And yes, they very much were inspired by Paper Mario with that mechanic

The director of the game had an account where he did DMCV challenge runs and acknowledged that Royal Guard was his inspiration there

For sure, but why would I, you know? The game was designed with that in mind and parrying and counter attacks are super strong.

Agreed, I can't think of something more disheartening than a game with a sub 10 million budget being put next to games completely self funded.

I think a new category based on budget or team count would fix that as well.
December 14, 2025 at 11:07 PM
Idk, you even admit the categories are meant to open up opportunities, but no other game had a chance to win Best RPG, Indie, Debut indie, if it also wins GOTY. Specific categories and trimming some of the redundant ones is a way to keep these more even.

Ex: Oscars have best makeup and costumes.
December 14, 2025 at 11:01 PM
Is that really the case when almost everything has a parry these days? The thing I heard it compared to the most around release was Sekiro.

Sure it's a turn based RPG, but the reliance on parries moves the game away from RPGs being based around you strategizing to being based around reactions.

It's a good game, but I think the thing people jump around over is the story.

It's a game that plucks mechanics from everywhere, it wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Not a bad thing, but it's a bit of a head scratcher when people go overboard about this game "reviving JRPGs".
December 14, 2025 at 10:40 PM
Do you try on purpose to be deeply unpleasant?
December 14, 2025 at 10:37 PM
The story quite literally is about killing god
December 14, 2025 at 7:11 PM
I don't think the panel is even interested in these categories at this point.

This is all a glorified advertising vector, honoring the games clearly comes second.

It's not even Eminem/E33's fault, but it is adored the same way and weaponized the same way by a subsect of their fans.
