due to Reasons we ended up talking about Abu Ghraib in class today and exactly zero (0) of my students had heard of it. I told them to read about it (not look at images) and also to look up the art of Muhammad al-Mansi, who was imprisoned in Guantanamo. This is a piece of his that moves me:

Okay finally here are some questionable bits. the DEPRAVITY PREFIX FOR SLUTS and a letter to the editor about how the correspondent used to be racist but then he was operated on by an Irish surgeon with Indian, Jewish, Trinidian, African, and Dutch nurses/attendants, and now he's not anymore

The last time I so much as opened an Esperanto textbook was probably ten years ago, before I had started Russian or Yiddish. Now, having studied both (with varying degrees of success), seeing random Slavic and Germanic borrowings in a sea of Romance text is fucking my brain up

I think my favourite thing is that the illustrators/designers went all out and made Esperanto-language advertisements and radio programmes, which has the uncanny effect of gesturing to an alternate history where Esperanto was in enough daily use for such things
