1/ Today’s #JobsReport data provide a final snapshot of the U.S. economy before the government shutdown, showing unemployment ticking up with labor market participation flat. 119k new jobs were created, compared to a summer average of 70k.

Black and women workers are facing elevated rates of unemployment in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia in 2025. This divergence could be due in part to disproportionate effects of federal layoffs, as federal employment is concentrated in the DC-metro region.

Tariffs are also playing a role in dampening outlooks – EG researcher Chris Bangert-Drowns finds the labor market in high-exposure industries continues to underperform compared to the overall economy, despite an upward revision to some industry employment last month.
