kind of wild that some of leopold blooms notable considerations so far involve taking a shit outside, being lecherous and having breath that smells kind of like urine -- like I get hes a decent fellow but come on man

Leopold Bloom is a very tangible man, which is basically the exact opposite of Stephen Dedalus -- his early chapter has him commenting on a apt interest regarding money, women, food and the real estate of the world around him; TLDR this is a man who enjoys girls, grub and gold!! no fer shame!!

its hilarious how joyce slams with you like the fucking library and literary dance that is chapter 3, an insight at most wistful melancholy man in dublin thinking about dying alone

then chapter 4 opens up and this is leopold bloom making breakfast with his cat

its not that we're lacking closure but more insofar that dedalus's character is one that begets the lack of closure (the pondering of and creation of poetry alone on the rockbed of the shore, wonderances of how it must feel to die at sea, the wandering of the lone passing ship in the bay)

The ending of proteus is good in the way that it departs in a bittersweet freedom and idle manner befitting for stephan dedalus
January 10, 2026 at 10:18 AM
proteus kind of weaves between comprehensible and not, but joyce consistently reminds you that stephen is indeed travelling on the beach -- hes constantly veering into mental recounts of random considerations, events or like pretend scenarios or just like having a conversation

stephen dedalus for like most of proteus

"History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake."

Also, notable line from the second chapter -- considering what was JUST presented in the same chapter (the mythic nature of history) wherein Stephen interjects his usual somber, echoing that his comprehension of his own history is uncertain

Anywhere Stephen Dedalus goes its pretty much a full screen viewing movie of his thoughts and inner dialogue having a full ponderance -- its essentially an enhanced version of that thing you did when you were a kid when you watched a character run at top speeds looking out the window of a car

stephen is, and even sees himself as, kind of pathetic and lacking rule over his life (even using the weak pathetic child he helps Sargent as a mirror) but I really enjoyed this early part for its commentary on the blurring between what is history and fiction, especially in presenting the interest

stephen dedalus when somebody brings up the british when reminding him why and how hes poor and pathetic
January 7, 2026 at 8:37 AM
When Joyce made Haines, he really did a swell job making what is essentially a very annoying British third wheel or something, wherein the guys like this Gaelic stuff is neato, but milk Granny only knows English and terribly sorry about the famines old chap while also being scared of foreigners
