'We're all smart. Distinguish yourself by being kind'.
As of this morning, concrete has yet to be poured on the former green area on Watercourse Road. The council still have time to do the right thing and return it grass and re-plant the four trees. Show Blackpool some love for a change!

To read #Cork City Council's statement this afternoon one would be forgiven to think that this is about 1 tree. The council has removed what was once public green space gradually over 15 years or so. Such poor mismanagement that they have now 'lost' a whole mini-parklet.

Great to have contributed to this new data set of genetic variation of Monterey pine (Pinus radiata) trees across the globe as part of the UCC Arboretum Research Group. The dataset will be used to learn more about this globally important tree species.

Fair play to the community group that is bravely pushing against the tide in Blackpool. A little community garden in front of where a public green space has been fenced off and removed by the local authority. Fighting the good fight. #Cork

In this series of images from Google Maps, you can see the gradual and deliberate neglect, privatisation, inappropriate parking, and tree removal (there was once 4 trees on the small site) that led to today. If you wonder how Bishop Lucey Park happened, here's your track record.

If you thought Bishop Lucey Park was the only nature lost in #Cork lately, think again. Today, Cork City Council removing trees and grass to lay concrete for parking of council vehicles in Blackpool. No planning permission, no 'Part 8', no public consultation. Just green space & nature wiped out...

Overall it's hard to love the new design. November isn't the best time of year to enjoy it and once the trees are back in leaf it may soften a little. However, designed and built amidst a biodiversity crisis, this is a real missed opportunity to return nature to the centre of the city. (8/8).

The decision to re-design the park on multiple levels (why?) means there are lots of steps (and ramps) requiring SO MUCH railings. They are everywhere. Awkward, adding to the clutter and many feel like an afterthought to deal with less than ideal design choices. (7/n)

William Morris once said you should have nothing in your house which isn't either beautiful or functional. Not sure what these structures are meant to be but the one on the left certainly requires lots of cluttery railings...and on that note...(6/n)

It's good to see many of the mature trees remaining although some of the decision making on what surrounds them is questionable. Here a group of trees embedded in gravel. (5/n)
November 18, 2025 at 1:34 PM
The majority of the surfaces are a few different types of gravel. The sort of stuff that will tear a kids knees to pieces when they inevitably fall on it. Cold, drab and uninspiring. The benches are actively hostile urban design. (4/n)
November 18, 2025 at 1:31 PM
There are some 'green' spaces remaining (but very few compared to what was formerly there). The feeling is much more of a city square or a pedestrianised street. It could hardly be called a park at this stage but based on the early plans, that was always the intention. (3/n)
November 18, 2025 at 1:25 PM
On the positive side it's good to see the city wall being given some prominence. The tiered sections either side create a circus maximus vibe and plenty of seating. The 'bus shelter' on top is far too big. (2/n).

It's good to see Bishop Lucey Park open again and there are some nice elements but overall it's rather charmless, cluttered and over-engineered. Strap yourself in for a rollercoaster ride of a thread (1/n)🧵 #Cork

I have views on the refurb of Bishop Lucey Park but will outline them another day. In the meantime, here's the extension of the masonic lodge into the park on public land sold for €1. #Cork

In a part of the city already suffering from a dearth of street trees, Cork City Council are cutting down their own. Here at the old Fire Station on Watercourse Road. Silver birch, Betula pendula, RIP.
