Now that I know what words are for, I feel an obligation to read. And not just to soothe my ailments, but to actually comprehend things, processes, people, viewpoints. I stuffed a lot of raw material into my head over the last decade, but I am woefully uneducated.

You mourn because you feel the pull of eternity. But it will pass, for every image has its natural end point, which is the point where your involvement ends.
It's not strange at all that 'finishing' a piece of art would bring out mournful feelings, because it could have been more and it could have been less and the small slice of time in which you, the artist, were its midwife, can never have the right duration. You mourn the paved-over and the unborn.

Every time I have a substantial realization about art now, part of me wants to "fix" every commissioned piece I made so far. This is vanity of course, but it makes for a nice contrast to my previous imagined sovereignty. I do want to be the best artist I can be and that does involve other people.
