Charlie N Holmberg does alterna-universe steampunk stuff. Zero spice. She also does some fairytale-esque novels. Re-reading your post makes me think she’s not what you’re looking for.

Not sure if Deanna Raybourn is what you’re looking for either, but she tends to be rooted in an historical time.

Where and how did you learn about this? Was it personal reading? Just something picked up along the way? Either way, this is further proof I still have so much reading to do & my partner is not going to love how many more books I acquire the next time we move.
