Due to unforseen circumstances our helpline will be closed for the rest of the day.

We will reopen on Monday 1 December.

When a child does not want to go to school, it's important for everyone to try to understand the reasons why and work together towards a solution.

Our pages on #attendance offer advice and practical tips to help support children and young people missing school for a range of reasons.

This week's FAQ Friday uses a bright green colour scheme and answers the question My child does not want to go to school - what can I do? The first text card highlights there could be lots of reasons why a child does not want to go to school and the importance of trying to understand why this might be. It poses some questions to consider including is your child avoiding a particular subject or time of day? Are there things at home creating stress, anxiety or worry? Is your child's avoidance of school related to mental health of additional support needs? Answer card one of three. Part two of the answer encourages families and schools to work together to find reasonable and workable solutions. Some suggestions of how to do this include a call to discuss reasons for non-attendance, a meeting to explore options and discussions around what works at home or in other settings. Answer card two of three. The final answer card highlights steps should be taken to remove any barriers preventing your child from attending school, or adding in additional support measures that might help. It also offers a helpful reminder to start with small steps to help build confidence and reduce overwhelm. Answer card three of three.

Part-time timetables can be a useful tool in supporting a child or young person returning to school after a period of absence, or whilst support is being arranged.

They should not however be used long-term or instead of receiving the right support to help children & young people attend full-time.

Children don’t “fail” to go to school.

If they’re not attending, something is getting in the way - often beyond their control.

This is identified as part of Enquire's FAQ Friday's series with this week's colour scheme being a forest green. The first part of a three part answer identifies if the school excludes your child they must follow certain procedures and set timeframes. The school must contact parents or carers on the day to highlight the exclusion and check it is safe to send the child home. A meeting must be arranged to discuss the exclusion within 7 days, and the school must explain in writing the reasons for exclusion and the right to appeal within 8 days of the exclusion. If these procedures are not followed, the exclusion mabe be considered to be 'unlawful'. Answer one of three. Part two of the answer recommends working with the school to identify what led to the exclusion and what steps can be taken to avoid it happening again. It also highlights that the school may wish to draw up a plan of action and have formal agreement, by way of a signature from you or your child. Whilst this may be helpful, it is not a legal requirement for return. Answer two of three. The final answer card reminds us that school must not send someone home as a way of managing their additional support needs. It also highlights that exclusion, particularly multiple exclusions, may be a sign that a child needs more or different support. Should this be the case there should be a discussion around the support your child is receiving (if any) and a review of any plans in place. Answer three of three.

Many care experienced pupils in Scotland qualify for a Co-ordinated Support Plan (CSP). These plans make sure agencies work together.
