We're waiting for the students and their teachers to arrive for the @engmediacentre.bsky.social A level English Language conference in London. Not long to go now 😬

Lovely bit of rage bait in the Oxford WOTY graphics for the term.
One for @emhumps.bsky.social I think :-)

We've just recorded an interview with @lynneguist.bsky.social for the @lexispodcast.bsky.social and then this absolute whopper of a piece gets published. It's jam-packed with clichéd complaints, hoary hyperbole & xenophobic waffle.

There was a link in that Telegraph op-ed to this absolute abomination of a piece by Simon 'Strictly English' Heffer* 😬
November 5, 2025 at 7:20 AM
This doom-laden op-ed (by a teacher writing for the Telegraph) links the supposed Americanisation of young people's English to screen time, cultural imperialism (although the Telegraph would never use such a wooooke term), the nanny state and unboxing videos.

Hmm... beyond the headline, this is a bit more complex than kids sounding more American.

I'm going to give it a solid 7.

A sensible point in Guardian letters about the long tradition of using daft catchphrases like 6-7...
October 22, 2025 at 5:40 AM
More on that 6 7 trend that no one really wants to know more about... It's 'tyrannising maths teachers' now, apparently.

Follow the #NoKings hashtag if you want to gather some excellent data for a placard-based language investigation! Here's a great example.

I hate to say it but The Telegraph is running its regular 'woke nonsense' story again. It's *literally* the same story every week, even down to the same cast of talking heads describing it as Marxist thought policing or leftist linguistic gatekeeping.

There's going to be elderly pedants' blood pressure hitting new heights with this potential less/fewer farrago.
October 17, 2025 at 5:57 AM
My learned friends, how long until The Telegraph covers this as part of its 'woke nonsense' agenda?

This one's interesting about accent attitudes, 'accent recovery' and it even features @christianilbury.bsky.social!

Staff the barricades! The Telegraph is running its monthly 'we've found another inclusive language guide and we're gonna get mad about it' article. This time, they're angry that women exist in workplaces.

Interesting one for Lang Diversity, with nods to gender, social groups, technology, region and class. Still not sure about how she said 'Magic Stars' but there you go...

She has also written an intro to CDA for @engmediacentre.bsky.social emagazine (April 2025) and there's a new piece coming about the manosphere and language in the next edition in December.
