What else should the UK do to cement its leadership on transitioning away from fossil fuels?
⛔Close the tieback loophole in the legislation
🛑Reject the Rosebank field development to ensure consistency with the new policy
🤝Join BOGA to communicate action & encourage other gov’ts to follow suit.

There is one fly in the ointment—the plan includes an exception for oil & gas production on or near to existing offshore fields (also called “tiebacks”).

The UK policy prohibits new onshore and offshore oil and gas exploration licences. ✅

It also establishes a North Sea Jobs Service and a Fair Work Charter to enable a just transition to support workers and communities. ✅

Coalitions including COFFIS & CETP are showing that reforming financial flows is possible.

At a time when gov'ts are tightening their budgets, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies can be a triple win, demonstrating fiscal responsibility, climate leadership, & improving national security prospects.

If the G20 as a group isn’t moving forward, members can & must still show leadership.

Our 🆕 report shows that, across 5️⃣ selected G20 countries, between 30% and 55% of fossil fuel subsidy measures could be removed immediately.

While the G20 hasn't delivered much progress on subsidy reform, the commitment encouraged members to take some steps in the right direction.
➡️Canada delivered a framework to phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies
➡️US, China, Germany, Italy, Mexico, & Indonesia undertook subsidy peer reviews
