Jane Austen and the Sanditon series are why I’m here (mostly).
That he most definitely didn’t follow!

There are very interesting excerpts of letters from the Prince to Mary Hamilton, a subgoverness to his sisters. The Prince was smitten with Mary H…until he saw Mary Robinson (Perdita). In the letters it is clear that Mary H tried to give the Prince sound advice …

There is a graphic of a caricature of Mary and the Prince that is in the British Museum in Paula’s book that not only was a unflattering drawing, but also lyrics set to “O Polly is a sad Slut!”
Also, there are lots of great color pages in the center of the physical book.

(Sorry, in an earlier post George wasn’t the Prince Regent yet. He was the Prince of Wales 🤦🏻♀️)

Florizel is a prince and Perdita is a shepherdess (really a princess though) in this story, so one could imagine the 🔥🔥🔥 between Mary and George while Mary was speaking her lines as Perdita to Florizel and the actual Prince of Wales. #PaulaByrneBookClub

Part Two of #Perdita, Chapter 8: Florizel and Perdita
The Prince Regent was 17 on December 3, 1779 when he went to a performance of Florizel and Perdita, Garrick’s adaptation of A Winter’s Tale where Mary Robinson had the role of Perdita “the lost one” and she caught his eye.

Mary Robinson got many offers from wealthy men to be placed under their protection, like Sir John Lade (heir to brewery fortune). Portrait by Joshua Reynolds. Gossip rags claimed that they were having an affair. #PaulaByrneBookClub

Mary held her ground, even though Brereton had many valid points (Tom being stupid with money, Tom’s infidelity). There were rumors of an affair with manager Richard Sheridan of Drury Lane, although Mary said that there was nothing to it (Portrait by John Hoppner 1750) #Perdita

In Bath, Mary and Tom saw a George Brereton, a creditor of Tom’s. This guy made a huge pass at Mary, and when they got away from him to Bristol, he followed her. Brereton called in a promissory note and told Mary he’s forgive Tom’s debt if she would be his mistress.

So sorry for the delay. I was on an impromptu trip to visit family…and now I’m back.
#Perdita Chapter 7: A Woman in Demand
Mary Robinson was in great demand for sure. In 1779 Tom and Mary visited Tom’s father Harris in Wales and stopped in Bath on the way back to London.

Even though Mary Robinson was well thought of for her acting ability, her family didn’t approve of her profession, like her brother John and her mother Hester. #PaulaByrneBookClub #Perdita

Mary Robinson had not one, but two breeches roles: Jacintha in The Suspicious Husband and Fidelia in The Plain Dealer. Mary attracted attention from these roles, not necessarily from her acting skill and talent but because the shape of her legs were exposed. #Perdita

Mary Robinson had a second daughter, Sophia in 1777. She suffered from convulsions like her sister Maria Elizabeth, but Sophia didn’t survive. Sheridan was more upset about the child than her own father Tom (who kept on with his affairs) #PaulaByrneBookClub #Perdita

Mary was received very well in her theater debut. She was paid £10 for each appearance as Juliet. There are examples of many positive reviews of Mary’s performance. She went on to play other parts in other plays for Sheridan. Above: new entrance to Drury Lane 1775 #Perdita

In Chapter 6 Paula does an excellent job of describing the atmosphere of late 1700s theater, the costumes, makeup and goings-on during the performances. Link to the type of make up used on actors at the time pin.it/1CiiLDRf0

This is a nice link to “The Story of Theatre” on the Victoria & Albert Museum with a section on 18th century theatre and one on David Garrick (portrait below). I was able to visit the V & A museum last summer but did not see this. Next time. #PaulaByrneBookClub

Mary Robinson debuted on stage at Drury Lane on December 10 1776 and got a round of “thundering applause” according to her Memoirs. She was listed on the playbill as “A Young Lady” londonstagedatabase.uoregon.edu/event.php?id=3…#Perditata

Sheridan had been to school with Tom Robinson. What a small world. Anyway, Sheridan was looking for talent and found Mary. Garrick even came out of retirement to tutor Mary. Check out this Chawton House post on IG. www.instagram.com/p/DALT7VBNt9...

Drury Lane theater, Richard Brinsley Sheridan. We read a bit about Sheridan in Paula’s The Genius of Jane Austen…
🚨Wait a minute! #Sanditon aside 🚨
Mary and Tom (like Mary and Tom Parker)
Brereton, like Lady Denham and Clara Brereton
(Still have Sanditon on the brain 😂)
