Second, i think folks take it as calling the work being less than 100% authentic and original. And when your work is supposed to be an expression of yourself and your soul, which you base a lot of your self worth on, that's not something you wanna hear.

I can think of two aspects to this, both stemming from the wider online artist community:
First, i suspect it's self reinforcing, people see others being offended so it must be bad, then when someone says this bad thing to them, of course they're offended.
