I draw on decolonial theory, psychoanalysis and feminism to make this argument, and particularly look at how even left-wing populisms struggle to break free from the idea that Europe is superior to other continents.

The book argues that we hang on to the 'populist' as an external threat because we do not want to face the faults and failings of liberal democracy in Europe. The populist is therefore a fantasy, an idea of a malevolent power which destroys our benevolent and equal Europe.
