I'm so happy the Christmas Cottage made the list of the USA's most festive shops. This shop has been around for 51 years (with the same owner!!)

I even worked there as a teen one summer.

A recent poll by MarketBeat ranked all the best festive Christmas stores in each state, and the Christmas Cottage came out on top in Oregon.

Thanks to everyone who joined us at #12DaysofCozies!

And thanks to the @cozymysteryclub.bsky.social for setting this up!

Angela, it'd be awesome to see you at the Ashland Mystery Fest, but I know it's on the opposite side of the country from you. :)

Please keep reading and enjoying cozies!

Remember that publishers make their decisions on which series to renew based on how well the books in the series sell. Asking your library to buy books is a great way to show support. (Your library might have an online recommendation form!)

Is there anything about yourself, your books, or writing process that you would like to share?

Instagram is my most-used social media platform & you can also follow me on Facebook. I'm on both as @writeremmelineduncan.

I'm on TikTok as @DuncanEmmeline, but I mainly post scenic videos.

I also have a low-key newsletter you can sign up for on my website.

In Mayhem at a Halloween Wedding, the second Halloween Bookshop Mystery, I introduced a kitten. (I also introduced a kitten in Double Shot Death, the second Ground Rules Mystery, so this is clearly a theme.)

My cat, Matilda, was not the inspiration for either, since she just came home this year.

My advice: read widely, but also keep up with current books being published in the cozy mystery sphere. And then: write what you'd love to read. Write the sort of book that would keep you up at night, needing to read one more chapter.

#12DaysofCozies
A reoccurring question I see in chats is "what advice do you have for aspiring cozy mystery writers?"

Waylon is the inspiration for Jack in the Halloween Bookshop Mystery Series. Waylon is mostly Great Pyrenees (with some Anatolian Shepherd), and he loves visiting bookshops — probably because the dog-friendly shops have treats!

I can proudly say that I've come up with my all of my titles. I usually create a list and send them to my editor, who then discusses the titles in house (because they know more about that side of publishing than I do). And one of my top two suggestions has always been the winner.

#12DaysofCozies
Plus, the titles are also perfection!

I see being a plotter or pantser as a spectrum, versus an either/or. I fall in the middle. I have to know the ending--and more importantly, the logic of the ending--before I can start. But I don't know every single subplot, or every clue my sleuth will find.

#12DaysofCozies
One question someone sent me to ask was "Are you a plotter?" How do you approach writing your mysteries?

This is a tricky question to answer! I always try to reflect the real world in my books, while adding cozy flair to create a world I'd love to live in. I try to focus on the cozy tropes and how to twist them to feel fresh, while respecting the genre.

#12DaysofCozies
Later, you did the same thing with a bookshop. A cozy literary theme we know and love - yet it was new!

How do you approach writing a subgenre like cozies with a fresh approach?

My visits to the Ole Latte coffee cart gave me my initial inspiration! I also like that food cart pods are small communities within a larger city, which is a fun space for a cozy.

I *love* the Nightmare Before Christmas. There's a reason why Bailey's main sidekick, her Great Pyrenees, is named Jack! (Which is short for Jack Skeleton.)
Was the Nightmare Before Christmas inspiration?...
December 6, 2025 at 1:22 AM
For me, cozy mysteries were a natural fit for my voice. The community-driven aspect of the stories appeals to me, along with the amateur sleuth aspect. I mean, if you're murdered, would you rather the police solve the case, or your barista?

(Clearly, the answer is your barista.)

#12DaysofCozies
One of my favorite questions is what inspired you to write cozy mysteries?
Is there a trope, theme, or topic within the subgenre that you especially enjoy and want to explore as a writer?

There are two books currently out in the Halloween Bookshop Mystery Series, with book 3 (Hysteria at the Historical Society) coming out next year! The cover will give you a clue as to when it's set.

My first published cozy mystery was Fresh Brewed Murder, which is the first of the Ground Rules Mystery Series! #12DaysofCozies
For those who are new to you and your titles, what was your first published novel?

I wish I knew the answer to this question. Maybe an Agatha Christie?

I grew up seeing stacks of cozy mysteries around so it's not a surprise I ended up writing them!
Do you remember the first cozy mystery you ever read? Or a mystery that had an impact on you as a reader (making you want to write)?

I’m neutral/indifferent to who wins the Tigers-Mariners series, but that Robles hit by pitch decision was terrible. The replay clearly shows the ball hit the bat first before hitting his hand.

And Robles probably just wants to go home. He looks miserable and clearly in pain.

My new favorite website: Is Portland Burning?

The answer is no (and you can check out the live cameras to see for yourself).

This is almost as good as "Is it snowing in Portland?" (Also no.)
