Everyone who knows Marcy knows how lucky I was to be her advisee! I’m thrilled to have finished my PhD and am so looking forward to heading across the pond for my next steps (after a healthy dose of relaxation).

Turned on the radio last night just in time to hear Kai Ryssdal ask the motivating question behind one of my diss chapters (“What happened to the people in these towns, the families of these again, I’m assuming, mostly men, who lost their jobs?”).

The American manufacturing sector has taken a huge hit over the last 50 years or so. In 1970, about a quarter of Americans were employed in manufacturing. As of 2023, only about 13 million people still work in manufacturing, which makes up less than 10% of those employed.
