Faro would be walking bowlegged for a week. Every step on the dawn lit cobbles echoed through the core of him, a sluggish, throbbing ache. With each footfall, he winced a bit. Alexios had received it three mornings before, delivered with its own honor escort, in a chest of fine, dark oak, chased with finishings of gold. It had been a lovely chest, and the head inside, nestled in folds of velvet, was lovely too. It was the bust of a young woman, carved out of white marble to capture her refined, delicate features. Alexios had set the bust on a table in his private apartments, hoping that it was a symptom of the medium that made her face so cold. Alexios had posed for a sculptor, too. The woman had sketched his face, first, in charcoal. Then she had made the bust of simple clay, forming the raw, wet earth into Alexios’s cheeks, nose, and lips. She used the clay bust as a model for the marble one, and after a month it was delivered to the royal villa. Alexios’s parents, the king and queen, had praised the artist’s skill in capturing their son’s look so handsomely. Alexios had forced a smile, nodding and agreeing, all the while thinking that his own blank, sightless white eyes were unsettling, bordering on creepy.

Cedras reached what must have been Prince Alexios’s working table, covered in stacks of parchment, books and scrolls. Some of these were diverting indeed—one appeared to be an exquisite, detailed map of the Papian Kingdom, overlayed with a delicate grid of roadways. He’d have to see if he could look more at those, later, but for now he swept them aside. At last, Cedras found a stack of fresh sheafs, weighted down by a fist sized piece of broken marble. He set the stone aside and seized a few pieces of parchment, a tablet, and pen. “That’s my nose,” said Queen Dafina suddenly, pointing at the piece of stone. Auro turned red and exchanged a look with Prince Alexios, who said, “No it isn’t.” “Begging your sorry excuse for a royal pardon, Alexios, but I think I would recognize my own nose.”

Faro groaned, draping his arms around Cedras’s neck, leaning in, close enough for Cedras to smell his skin. It was musky and spicy, a little sour with sweat. Cedras liked that, though he could not have said why. Though, Cedras supposed lemons were sour, and he liked those. Perhaps it wasn’t so odd. Faro cleared his throat again. “Really…?” “Hmm?” Said Cedras, distracted by the smeared purples of half-healed bruises on the place below Faro’s ribs. “You said, you ‘just really…’?” “Oh.” Cedras leaned forward, pressing a soft kiss to Faro’s belly. He didn’t think about it first. “I just really…want this.” “Yeah?” Faro rasped. Cedras peered up at Faro, staring directly into his blown black pupils, and slid his arms around his middle. “Yes.”

After performing CPR on a drowning stranger:
Sage Fall Lineshares It seemed to go on that way for a long time; Cedras eventually came to think he had not been fast enough. He did not stop, though. He couldn’t say why, until the muscled skin beneath his hands went rigid, and the man jerked up, retching and gasping. He sprayed Cedras with what felt like half the harbor.             Cedras rocked back onto his heels, waiting as the drowned man choked and coughed himself back to life.             “Fuck me,” the man said, bringing a shaking hand to his forehead. His voice was a strangled rasp.             Cedras had no idea how to reply to that, so he simply stared. Without his lenses, there wasn’t much to stare at. He waited, and waited, for the man to notice him. It took so long that Cedras considered simply getting up and going home.
