In the wake of Charlie Kirk’s death, political leaders have rightfully called for an end to political and gun violence.

But many have done so while, in the same breath, whitewashing the violent rhetoric that Kirk espoused and calling for more violence.

That is unconscionable and it’s dangerous.

Nationalism is not patriotism.

Criminalization is not compassion.

Presidents are not kings.

This July 4th, we can’t mistake nationalism for patriotism.

We can’t allow the weaponization of power to be disguised as “love of country.”

And we can’t let American flags hide the unimaginable assault that GOP extremists and President Trump are unleashing on our neighbors today.

Ten years ago today, marriage equality became the law of the land—in large part, due to six KY couples who stood up to a system that refused to recognize their humanity.

Without them, my partner and I would not be afforded the privileges we are today.

They proved that #LoveAlwaysWins.
