For a show that seems compelled to make references to earlier shows SNE never does the thing Picard and Kirk often did and discuss how the current situation aligns (or conflicts) with federation values. It's all character work and no principle.

FanRewrite: Una/Ball pushes the show to be more radical, causing actor schisms (Kirk red herring). The Suits want it gone because it's not worth the hassle/HUAC investigation, and Pike/Gene is the culprit because he wants to protect the brand (both good and selfish reasons).

This season is so weird, because it's been fun and easy to watch, but then it sits horribly. Space Adventure has a great setup, looks wonderful, clever real world stand-ins, and then the mystery hinges on an unrelated throw away relationship. Empty calories.

It's frustrating because being on alert for losing the plot is so baked in there is a funny term for the people who do (Badmirals). The tendency to go wrong and therefore the need to observe the values has always been part of the brand, it doesn't require pure worship.

People should keep their powder dry for something worth defending! I really like a lot of the streaming era, but maybe it needs fresh eyes that truly stand for something more than a franchise existing.
