What really bugs me is when you see, as in this article, this rationalisation like "ah, well you see, it's not *really* human like complex emotional behaviour because it's a result of these neurological and chemical processes in the body" as if humans are slabs of tofu with souls.

It feels like a classic entrenched over-correction. Like sure, I can easily believe once upon a time the trend was to make really poor assumptions about animal behaviour because we couldn't put out human experience down, but no we actively ignore clearly relatable behaviour.

I contend to anyone who will listen that the first person shooter didn’t *really* get good until it became a horror genre.

Doom works because it was always closer in DNA to arcade games.

Completely agree. Super Mario World is clearly building on it, but so much is added in the move to 16bit it loses more of SMB3 than it keeps.

I always thought it was sad that they mined all the iconography of 3 for Super Mario 3D World instead of something like a Rayman Origins drawn 2D affair.

Absolutely. Even modest application is why SMB3 looks so much better.

I think the bowser castles show how black makes most NES palettes work, actually.

I agree on SMB3, but I think the original SMB is just such an ugly application of the NES colour palette, it brings it down too much.

I really love Super Mario Land because it’s like a lovely glimpse into if SMB wasn’t the worst colours.
