Frederic Bazille was born #OnThisDay in 1841. He was a medical student before his parents permitted him to study painting. As a benefactor of the Impressionists, he played an important role during their formative years. Sadly, he was killed in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. #Art #Painting

Claude Monet died #OnThisDay in 1926 at the age of 86. At his funeral, a friend removed the black cloth draped over the coffin, stating: "No black for Monet!" and replaced it with a flower-patterned fabric. He is buried in Giverny church cemetery.

Claude Monet painted “The Magpie” in 1869. It was the first time he used colored shadows and it shocked the art world, so the painting was rejected for exhibition. The technique would later be associated with Impressionism and the painting is now one of Monet's most famous.

Gustave Caillebotte painted "Paris Street; Rainy Day" in 1877. He was the youngest of the Impressionists, but unlike Monet or Renoir he used more refined brushstrokes. The painting remained in his family until 1955 and is now at the Art Institute of Chicago.
