This term led to some kerfuffle once when we had recently adopted a large, lively dog. I had made pumpkin brownies for a visitor, who asked for "another of those delicious squares." The dog erupted, jumping & barking at the window. We eventually figured out he thought she had said "squirrel."

My husband says she looks like a giant wooly worm caterpillar. 😎

I see this most often from my students (who are studying editing, and so tend to be readers & language lovers) in "give free reign." I get why it seems plausible if you don't happen to ride horses--royalty who reign are free to do what they want! Suspect it'll become standard in my lifetime.

Fuck, yeah!

Awww, Kingsley! Great name. ❤️ I do love a nice doggie lean.
December 5, 2025 at 10:40 AM
He wouldn't! Though if he really likes you, he might want to lean into you a bit--gently, though you'd still feel it for sure.

Agreed. It's pretty fun, and doesn't take itself too seriously--sometimes downright silly, but in a way that seems respectful of the franchise.

We always knew our Irish wolfhound was going to be huge, so we were REALLY firm about no jumping up from Day 1. I think it's behaviour all dogs should be taught not to do, but if your dog is going to end up 180 lbs and taller than a miniature horse, it seems kinda crucial.

I recently visited friends in the Netherlands, & we brought their small, well behaved dog into restaurants in Amsterdam & The Hague. Loved it! Our dog is very large, but well behaved, & I we never let him approach people who wd rather not, so we take him where we can. He makes many people smile.

Exactly!

Agreed. Also not anyplace where they're required, period! I'm happy for anyone to wear one who likes, but some of us don't like.

I was out on several non-dog-friendly errands this a.m. and stopped by the hotel cafe to ask if it was true I could come in w/ the dog. They said yes, I could bring him into the cafe area to order, & then we could go sit in the hotel lobby that's the other half of the space. Tomorrow, I hope!

Indeed. Though can't say I'd be thrilled to have them as a supposedly professional uniform (all three women are dressed at that length, implying it's regulation) even in a very warm location 😀.

The miniskirts are for sure not helping.

Like they're wearing jaunty little berets on a rakish angle!
