Given this confluence of the old and the new, a little history seems in order.
Like many AIDS benefit parties, the legendary White Party began as a relatively small party held in a private residence. It was a very local event, with friends joining together to celebrate life and to raise money in support of friends who were sick. By the late 1980s, the party had outgrown a private residence and moved to the house and grounds of Vizcaya, with its picturesque setting near Coconut Grove on the shore of Biscayne Bay, where it continues today.
Always held on the Sunday evening after Thanksgiving, the White Party continued to grow, both in size and in national, then international, acclaim. Very early on, the number of people who wished to attend exceeded the capacity of Vizcaya. As more and more celebrants and donors descended on Miami each year for the party, its timing on a long holiday weekend at the beginning of winter made it a natural for expansion.
The White Party Committee, ever focused on raising money for the cause, expanded the event to a series of fundraisers, beginning on Tuesday before Thanksgiving and continuing through the weekend to the Monday after the White Party itself. Most of these ancillary events were and are held on South Beach, which developed a large gay community and presence concurrently with the growth of White Party Week. Yet the most coveted ticket is still a ticket to the White Party at Vizcaya, where 2,000 donors continue to gather to celebrate life and raise money in support of friends who are sick each year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
