The underwear and socks were all new, as was one dress and one shirt. The other 56 items all came from Ebay. I dunno. 48 a year seems massive. Anyway. I was thinking about consumption patterns

And a celery jar is a jar that sat on the table filled with celery! There's a little saucer for salt, too. Grandad's is Edwardian and made from pressed glass.

My pa had to leave school at 16 cos his family were v poor - his siblings both left at 14 but he was the 'smart' one. He got fantastic marks. The letter, to my gran, accompanying his results, is full of regrets that he was leaving. There's a copy of the ref his head wrote. That's very moving, too.
