Really? Of course my experience was small, undergrad colleges where one mostly ate with colleagues of other departments. In a large, grad-program, politicized university department, this may well apply.

My first sem teaching, just 3 students in Phil of Religion class. They asked toward the end, how I would grade. I suggested, "on a curve," and then explained since they were equally good, they were all average and would all get Cs. Scared the shit out of them. No sure why I thought it was funny.
