We recently reported that promoter competition can contribute to the robust insulation of gene regulatory domains (www.nature.com/articles/s41...).
We now offer a 4-years PhD contract to investigate whether the dirsuption of this regulatory mechanism can lead to congenital defects. More details 👇

#Preprint alert! 📣

We are thrilled to share the work led by Lara Zorro-Shahidian and Lucio di Filippo, in which we show that #MLL2 controls gene expression in both #ESC and upon #differentiation by facilitating the #enhancer like activity of #LINE1 elements

MLL2 facilitates long-range gene regulation through LINE1 elements
Transcriptional regulation is tightly linked to chromatin organization, with H3K4me3 commonly marking both active and bivalent promoters. In embryonic stem cells (ESC), MLL2 is essential for H3K4me3 d...

Really proud of Michaela Bartusel, who initiated this work while being a PhD in our lab. Michaela never gave up and, together with the great guidance of my friend and former colleague Eliezer Calo, made some very interesting findings regarding the genetic basis of orofacial clefting.
Non-syndromic orofacial clefts (OFCs) are common birth defects with unclear molecular causes. @ajhgnews.bsky.social latest article studies an OFC-associated risk locus & implicates tRNA splicing defects that cause ribosome stalling & neural crest cell dysfunction: www.cell.com/ajhg/abstrac... #ASHG

Do you know where transcription of a gene actually stops? Hint: it is not the annotated gene end.
In our new paper in Nucleic Acids Research we argue that phosphorylation on threonine 4 of RNA Pol II CTD is a marker of transcription termination in animals... 🧵
