Anyone who wants to blog out textual analyses with an eye toward identifying the likely author or co-author of every Trump statement can do so; it will read like a conspiracist fever dream and do nothing to alter anything real in the world. Again, if Trump said it, the words are attributable to him.

But for years now those of us who track statements Trump publishes and is wholly responsible for have been dealing with people derailing conversations by speculating about ghost-authorship.

It really does feel like half of those who are Trump critics are willing to instantly let him off the hook for anything he says by hypothesizing that someone else wrote it for him.
