The top spot would have been nice, but I'm still honored my Doc Watson bio from @uncpress.bsky.social took the silver medal from @ncculture.bsky.social: "While Doc Watson: A Life in Music did not receive the Ragan Old North State Award for Nonfiction, it was the judges' selection for runner-up."

RIP Todd Snider, scruffy troubadour, masterful yarn spinner, plainspoken songwriter, troubled soul, and self-professed "tree-huggin', love-makin', pro-choicin', gay-weddin', Widespread-diggin' hippie." I'm grateful I got to see him perform two or three times.

Barbara Sims helped launch Elvis's career in the '50s. Almost 70 years later, she reviewed my Doc Watson biography, published by @uncpress.bsky.social: "Huffman avoids sentimentality, judgments or interpretation. But he leaves the reader with much to ponder."
Review: He was a Jazz Fest favorite. Now Doc Watson's life unfolds in a new biography.

Growing up in Alamance County, I never thought it would end up home to a place as cool as @saxapahaw.bsky.social in the 21st century. Unfortunately, the village (home to @hawriverballroom.com, @paperhandpuppet.org, & more) got slammed by floodwaters over the weekend. Please help out if you can.

Rob Ferguson felt called to speak out against the American plummet toward fascism. He added new lyrics to a classic patriotic song with help from Jon Shain & Susan Head, & enlisted DaShawn Hickman & Laurelyn Dossett to sing verses. I helped shoot & edit the video. Please share!

Brian Wilson and Sly Stone gone in the same week. They emerged from different poles of California music with radically varied but profoundly influential styles. And both brought a warmth and humanity to their music and lyrics that resonates strongly six decades later.

Keep them dogs quiet good, boy
I won't be long in the barn
If you get scared and run
You bastard, I'll break your arm, now
Lord, I love poachin' chickens
Yes, I love poachin' chickens
We'll fry 'em finger-lickin'
Some kind o' good
