The real question is, if you choose Maelle’s ending, do they still have that free will? Or are they now acting under her every whim? Even if she’s not controlling them directly, what if god herself came to your town and demanded eternal joy and happiness?

I think it’s because they have sentience that it becomes a hard decision. If they were all fake, then obviously Verso’s right. But considering there’s people who’ve lived and died full lives in the painting, it makes it way deeper.
