I've been reading up a bit on the British Mathematical Olympiads, and two things have amused me:
1) The BMO2 was known as "FIST" until 1991, when, presumably, someone realised it wasn't a great name for an exam 😅
2) The early past papers (1972 onwards) were just sort of bashed out on a typewriter

I recognised Chris Hughes from the "lying awake thinking about his mistakes" meme from Love Island, but couldn't remember his second name.
This is why I don't really watch celebrity things, because I never know who anyone is 😆

This strikes me as the sort of Teams feature that could be abused by people who think their job is more important than it is...

In #MathsToday my year 2 further maths students were introduced to the exponential form of a complex number. I always love sharing Euler's identity with them... three of the big-player constants of maths combining together to make -1 always feels like an important moment! #ALevelMaths

The original post used "elite students" to try and conflate "rich" with "bright"... 🤢

Well, this is a total surprise. When I was there 20 years ago, Durham absolutely was not rammed full of Oxbridge rejects from private schools
(/sarcasm) 🤣

Went for a run. Added a bit extra on to the usual route to round up the distance. Accidentally ended up drawing a fat dalek... 🏃‍♀️

Yeah, Desmos suggests there are two points of intersection, so I'd guess that rearranging one for y and substituting it into the other will give an equation in x to solve. I'm not near any paper so I can't actually try it 😅

A few years ago I turned a bunch of UKMT Senior Maths Challenge papers into self-marking MS Forms (5 questions per form) to set as optional quizzes for students, as a weekly bit of fun. To set them for your students, you need to be signed into Office 365. Click on the link to the quiz, then...

Love this time of year for getting the students excited about competitions #ALevelMaths #MathsToday

In #MathsToday #ALevelMaths I met our new AS further maths students (68 of them!) We started with a nice question on mini whiteboards about roots of quadratics, which also gave me the opportunity to evangelise about @desmos.com (not that I need an excuse) 😄

This year, I'm going to reinstate Maths Video of the Week, which I send out on Teams to our A Level Maths students (I've let it lapse in recent years) The descriptions and links to the videos are all ready to copy and paste each week - feel free to use!

New year, new role, new name sign 😊

I've found a more appropriately named one (can confirm it is both broad and grand) 😁

"Oh, he always behaves for me"

We've all known that one teacher who unhelpfully pipes up with this about a challenging student 😅

Interestingly, our highest scores in #ALevelMaths and A Level Further Maths this year were both achieved by (different) girls. In my teaching experience, girls who are very good at maths tend to be less confident about it, and often need telling, "Hey, you know you're really good at this, right?" 😊

And I am once again wondering, how is it that maths is simultaneously the most popular subject in the country, and almost universally seen as uncool by the general public? We need better PR!

Today in Oddly Specific Use Of Numbers: My car is in the garage having some repairs done. Apparently it's 46% complete. What does that even mean? 🤷‍♀️

Engaging in risky summer holiday behaviour. Have taken my lanyard out of its usual spot in my car, as the car is going into a garage for some repairs. Now wondering where is best to leave it so that first-day-of-term Emily doesn't have to do a panicked search 🤣

Ok, so my general view on AI is I'm a bit suspicious and mildly irritated by how ubiquitous it is becoming (everyone seems to have a "just use AI!" mentality) but this has actually saved me ages faffing about making some axes for a booklet... 😆
(I'm trying to be less grumpy about it, though)

Why is Integral Maths like this? 🙄🙄
July 21, 2025 at 8:43 PM
Not exactly a hack, but something I got from someone on here: installing a secondary Greek keyboard on my phone so that I can reply to queries from A Level Maths students using π, θ, λ, μ, α, β, etc without going mad 😅 Just need to scroll sideways on my space bar. Game changer!
