True, but all kinds of authors got their start doing fanfiction, or still do it. Even NK Jemisin, one of the most lauded speculative fiction authors alive, has copped to writing fanfiction. And not when she was younger, but now!

I thought it was very good, but certainly not stand alone—definitely refreshing to have consideration of deep and supportive friendships between adults, that those were of greater lasting importance than a romance arc, that one becomes a writer by telling stories and writing them down. Loved it.

Here’s the Wendell Berry quote from What Are People For?: “Rats and roaches live by competition under the law of supply and demand; it is the privilege of human beings to live under the laws of justice and mercy.” You’ll have to read Berry and this book. And the footnotes are crucial.
