Life-Cycle Plasticity Underlying the Survival of Glandirana rugosa Tadpoles in Intensively Managed Rice Fields

Graphical abstract: Modern drainage systems cause rice fields to dry out completely during the fallow season, posing mortality risks for amphibian larvae. This study examined whether the developmental plasticity of Glandirana rugosa larvae enables them to avoid habitat drying, thereby promoting population persistence in rice fields. Our field surveys and rearing experiments showed that the larvae in warmer habitats, including rice fields, accelerate development and metamorphose before winter, while larval overwintering is more common in cooler habitats.

Graphical abstract: Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) provide a standardized framework for monitoring biodiversity change in line with conservation targets. We assessed terrestrial biodiversity datasets for EBVs in Japan and Finland, and compared Japan's data availability with GEO BON and EuropaBON, identifying both unique strengths and gaps. EBVs can inform indicator development, such as the “30 by 30” target, while national products and regional comparisons can enhance coordinated responses to the global biodiversity crisis.

Graphical abstract: This study examined the impact of catchment-scale land use on the distribution of spring-dependent animals. GLM and MaxEnt analyses revealed that spring water stability and the percentage of permeable surfaces positively influenced the presence of Lefua echigonia, an indicator of spring-dependent animals. These findings highlight the importance of catchment-scale land use management for the conservation of spring-dependent animal habitats.

The most parsimonious result is consistent with an exponent of −1 for the scaling relationship between abundance and body size. Influence of land use evolution on ecological environment quality in the mountainous areas of Shiqian, Southwest China: Spatiotemporal characteristics and driving exploration

Based on the land use data from Shiqian County during 2005 to 2020, methods such as spatial autocorrelation, centroid migration, and multiple logistic regression were employed to explore the spatiotemporal differentiation characteristics of land use change and its ecological environment effects, as well as the explanatory degree of driving factors. The results show that Shiqian County, as a typical mountainous area, demonstrates that, under the guidance of the local government and relevant departments, land use in the karst mountainous region has gradually developed in a rational direction, and the ecological environment has gradually improved.

Paved roads in urban areas impact seed dispersal by altering feces deposition patterns within and near forest fragments. This study in Yokohama, Japan, recorded 1976 feces on paved roads and found that canopy cover significantly influenced deposition. The findings suggest that paved roads contribute to seed dispersal disservice, highlighting the need for management of paved roads in urban forests to mitigate their effects on ecological processes.

The defensive function of mutualistic ants for the Reverdin's Blue butterfly against two groups of parasitoids (tachinid flies and mermithid nematodes) differs among ant species, and this is affected by the number of precipitation days in the larval period of the butterfly. Camponotus japonicus is the most effective against flies, while Lasius japonicus against nematodes. The effect of rainfall is negative for fly parasitism but positive for nematode parasitism. Note that darker blue circles in the triangle indicate lower AIC values.

Temporal beta diversity describes changes in community composition over time, yet its fundamental properties under neutral dynamics remain unclear. Using simulations, we demonstrate that temporal distance-decay patterns exhibit upper limits and are strongly influenced by four key parameters: the fundamental biodiversity number, local community size, mortality rate, and immigration rate. These findings highlight key differences between temporal and spatial beta diversity, emphasizing the need to account for species pool properties in macroecological studies.

It focuses on the phototrophic biofilm component, with particular attention to the changes in the community over the seasons, the influence of ecological parameters on phototrophic microbial groups, and the appearance and structure of biofilms. The results emphasize the importance of moisture for the composition and resilience of the biofilm and provide insights into the seasonal adaptations of microorganisms in the cave entrance zone ecosystem.
