A text from my wife (who is a lawyer). Turns out she understands my profession (an aquatic ecologist) better than the NYT.

Happy to have served as the opponent for the PhD defense of Jingyao Niu today. Was a fun process to be part of… check out her published papers and those coming out soon. www.researchgate.net/profile/Jing...

And, here is a blue sky shot from my commute…

Portraitmoded head shots of some of the attendees of our recent evolutionary-ecology workshop in 🇨🇭 (Eawag, Kastanienbaum)… a mashup of philosophically inclined evolutionary biologists and professional philosophers of science!

To paraphrase Frederic Truten about his life as an artist, I share the notion that at the core of being a scientist is a yearning for curiosity, autonomy and generosity, alongside like minded people interested in discovering and making beautiful things together. To me this is thriving in science.

I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while… there is something energizing about holding a freshly completed PhD thesis. So much goes into these. They embody the best of what scientists do, and… are precious collectibles. Thanks Rebecca and congratulations!

It’s a good morning commute when the Swiss working dog poses in the sunrise for you.

My commute is ridiculously scenic… Eawag institute on Lake Luzern, Switzerland 🇨🇭. Great place to sabbatical and/or send students for research visits (eg 3-6 months is usually possible).

Can you add me as well? Although mostly I take pictures of others doing limnology on lakes.

Just back from many weeks of holiday to the fantastic news that SNF funded our workshop proposal, and that I have achieved, in the eyes of a funding body, the new career milestone of theoretician 🥳 …. or at least they’ve renamed my group as such… I couldn’t be happier 😅 or more terrified 😬
