Kansan tinkering with prairie restoration. Cheer for a surprisingly large number of mostly bad teams for distraction.

Possibly the last #nativeplants still blooming in Kansas.

Seeding restoration by the boat ramp. These are going in an area where we killed Johnson grass with a black tarp . Has some black-eyed susans & goldenrod, but needs a boost of #nativeplants .Bucket is purple poppy mallow, white indigo & blue indigo. Bag is ironweed & rigid goldenrod.

Late fall millipede.

Working lately in a small restoration that has a good population of tick-trefoils. Upside is seeing #nativeplants thrive. Downside is I can never seem to get all the sticktight seeds off my clothes & find them all over. These were on a kitchen placemat & a bed sheet (with some dog hair).

Here's a rusty bridge support just because I have a weird affection for rusty bridge supports.

Dug up a small piece of a brome grass field to prep it for seeding some prairie plants. The soil is not great, so I added a bit of the biochar I made this summer.

It's always eerie looking when they harvest in the dark because the combines kick up so much dust.

For some reason, the abandoned field where I'm doing some work this fall has sprouted dozens of enormous volunteer beets.

Because I'm a sucker for anniversaries, I started this book today.

Paper wasp hanging out on my car. Apparently it was the place to warm up during this week's cooler weather.

Good news for native gardeners in KCMO. The city has changed weed regs to be more native-friendly. Photos from article & were taken by KC Star photographer Dominick Williams. #nativeplants

Time to seed for next spring. These are redbuds and sweet Joe Pye weed from my yard to be spread in an island of trees in the middle of a small hayfield. Spent the summer clearing winter creeper and bush honeysuckle so there is plenty of ground under mature locusts and hackberries.

Pelicans that have been hanging out for a few weeks at the #wetlands have been joined by cormorants although they maintain strict segregation.

Early part of the sunset. Much prettier later, but I was walking the dogs and they made it quite clear they were not interested in lingering to admire the view.

Drought and unseasonable warmth have mostly screwed up our fall colors, but there are still a few good looking trees around.

These pelicans have been hanging out for a few weeks.
