Its conclusion echoes something the magnificent Kevin Zahnle said to me over coffee maybe 20 years ago: that "the frequency of atmospheres showing signs of biogenic oxygen is the most interesting question we [=humankind] know how to answer".

I think it's become influential in part because of Andy's work on/development of it, which I find much more interesting than Carter's. Also Szathmary and JMS's "seven major transitions" gave it a tacit boost.

In the meantime, though two quick points
a) the Earth's carbon cycle (and thus its biosphere) runs down waaaaay before the red sub giant stage.
b) if you live in the Oort cloud, as God and Freeman Dyson intended, the change from yellow dwarf to red giant to white dwarf might not worry you much
