Personally, speaking by my own experience, you're not overthinking that much.
There's a reason I don't usually engage with strangers: people online tend to be far too aggressive and not willing to listen anything even slightly off their own views.
Which is, in my opinion, immature indeed.

I think you did the right thing, in general.
Sadly people online, compared to real life, have next to no filters as they think they're immune to repercussions.
So, unless you avoid engaging and/or curate your interactions, stepping away for as long as possible is always the ideal option.
