He started by—guess what—*talking to people who voted for Trump.* He went on the Bulwark podcast. He went on Fox News. He demonstrated a willingness to talk to anyone
Meet the people where they are, in the streets or in the media. This is another point that just ties to the core humility of earning every vote. From that very first famous video on Fordham Road, where Zohran went to meet voters in the Bronx in a district that had swung very hard away from the Democrats, he literally took the campaign to the people and met them where they were, and listened. Since then, he's been at every event in the city from bar crawls to bar mitzvahs, showing not just a superheroic stamina that shames opponents twice his age, but an enthusiasm for both the city and its people that simply can't be faked. The same thing happened online. No matter what platform you use, or which influencers or outlets you get your information or entertainment from, Zohran was there, smiling and on-message, welcoming you in. Nothing was beneath him, and nothing was inauthentic, because he believes in his story.

Because Tuesday, amid the fiery embers of a self-immolating democracy, woke staged an electoral renaissance, and now it’s coming for you. Already, I bet you have a hellish, utopian vision of what America’s near future will look like. Money once used to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement will now be used to give millennials free avocado toast. More public office positions will be held by people with names that are only hard to pronounce if you don’t spend 20 seconds learning how to pronounce them. Democratic representation will be granted to people this country usually treats like dirt. Poor people will be granted access to more affordable housing, and expanded mass transit will allow them to freely go anywhere they please, even your cul de sac in Almaden Valley! OMG PRONOUNS! You and your favorite racist podcaster thought that you’d saved this country from the tyranny of an expanded, gender-blind pronoun set. Well, guess what? Zey’re back! Zey’re all back! Now, no (suddenly and gorgeously remodeled) public bathroom will be safe from unassuming transgender people who just need to take a dump! Is nothing sacred in Donald Trump’s America anymore?!

Do you want a candidate who supports genocide or one with a Nazi tattoo on his chest? is not only a question that will continue to be asked earnestly by people who previously rejected demands for such compromises, but one that cannot be answered without submitting to some amount of humiliation. All of it, in the end, becomes a question of what you will settle for, and how much you are willing to bear in exchange for a chance at making things less unbearable. But in a time of monsters, you can at least respect yourself. In a system that worked, a politician would not be an object of fandom; they could not afford to be this entitled or this reckless. They would just be applicants for a job, and do those jobs in a way that suggested they understood that they would have to defend their work when it came time to reapply for the position. Dragging that relationship back into balance-replacing the demeaning and utterly backwards relationship between the people and the public servants we are told we must abase ourselves to serve, making the Democratic Party or whatever replaces it work for its voters instead of conscripting them into an endless series of humiliations and compromises made less in the service of those goals than of the party itself-will be difficult. There is an unconscionable industry built around making people decide how much less than what they deserve they are willing to accept. Rejecting that as the false choice that it is, and insisting that the people vying to do the public's work take it seriously, seems like a reasonable place to start.

Declaring that someone is unfit to run for a public office is not the same thing as declaring that they should be banished from human society forever or publicly executed. No one is owed a Senate nomination
Let's keep this simple. This is not about whether Platner is an irredeemable person, or whether he can be forgiven. This is not about whether people were wrong to find him an intruging candidate in his initial appearances — I agree that he was. It's about who will be the Democratic candidate in a critical Senate in Maine, and "got a Nazi tattoo and still has it" is transparently disqualifying. You cannot be explaining your Nazi tattoo and defeat a multi-term incumbent who has consistently punched above her party's weight in the state. His allies are not doing him any favors if they allow him to believe otherwise, and if you don't like Mills you need to find someone else to challenge her.

Driving up to Rochester for the weekend, stopped off at Letchworth State Park
A very broad and very large waterfall seen from the top of a gorge. The spray is creating a rainbow to the left, and the sunlight on the trees indicates late afternoon. The trees across the gorge show some fairly spectacular fall color. A smaller but still considerable waterfall in the distance through the gorge. A railway bridge arches high over it and casts a shadow on the trees across the gorge, and is offset by the blue sky behind it. The spray from the falls has allowed thick green vegetation to grow on the gorge walls. An exceptionally long tree trunk is leaning into the falls where it must have landed after going over the top.
