While you're all here, if you want to read some actual journalism, this is the second story in my series about the collapse of the mental health care system in Pennsylvania. I'm really proud of it.
What happened to PA's promise of community mental health care
After a period of psychiatric hospital closures and investment in community support, Pennsylvania has shifted focus to the most restrictive care possible.

For a lot of people, in Pennsylvania and in most states, somewhere is jail or prison or something like it.

This, for me, is the point of journalism. I'm trying to explain how the choices of some people with a little bit of power fucked up the lives of people with none. That's it.

They are the result of a lot of tiny choices that may seem like the best one in the moment. Maybe they are. But a promise is a promise, and deviating slowly, incrementally, over time, means that 30 years down the path you're somewhere different.

This story is not sexy. The reporting was really difficult. I had to stare at a lot of badly formatted spreadsheets for a long time. Much to my chagrin, it did not involve any photo shoots. But I think the story is good because, hopefully, it explains that bad things are not inevitable.

I almost have to admire the complete lack of self-preservation here; either these people truly believe in their own bullshit so much that they think they can blow each other up without taking shrapnel, or they know and don't care as long as they make some money short term. gross shit all around.

truly I cannot remember cherished childhood memories, but if a man got fired for being a piece of shit in 2017, I will never forget

recently i've watched a lot of people that i love and respect also fall into despair and desperation at the incompetence of the medical system and the uncaring of society in general, & turn to huckster bullshit cause what else is there. so, i'd like to read it, if that counts for anything.
