Women with high risk of CHD should avoid COCP.

Epilepsy is more common in Down Syndrome and seizures can be worse premenstrually. Oestrogen and lamotrigine may interact

Mild: TXA
Mod: hormones
Severe: higher doses of both

1st Yr after menarche only 15% of girls are ovulating regularly

By 6th Yr 90% are ovulatory

History of menstrual problems needs to be thorough and enough time given per consultation

Most girls can cope independently

Period pants really help

Use a period bag

Practice

Visual supports

Track periods with an app

Young people with LD have the right to:
Understand puberty
Understand menstruation
Understand implications of any conditions
Understand their sexuality

(lots more in this slide but I cannot type quickly enough)

No increased risk of uterine anomalies, precocious puberty or vulvovaginal issues

Possible earlier menarche

Females may be subfertile

To support better posture
Support carers

In adulthood, maintaining health and social connection through movement and support is crucial.

In older age, due to premature ageing, dementia and physical needs, there is increased risk of falls, worsening hearing/vision and emotional needs

In adolescence we are looking at embedding habits for adult life.

Periods of activity may dip at this time, weight may increase, education demands increase.

Include movement in transition plans

Timely referral unlocks better function, participation and wellbeing.

Early therapeutic exercise results in better motor function.

Mobility is one of the strongest predictors of independence.

High inactivity and obesity are risks for increased movement difficulties

There are sensory and neurological considerations:

Visual and hearing differences affecting balance, spatial awareness and confidence

Other health issues

Risk of arthritis, thyroid disease, dementia etc

Children and young people with Down Syndrome have:

Hypotonia and ligament laxity
Foot and knee alignment issues
Lower strength and higher obesity
Cardioresp issues

This makes movement HARDER
