Did you know Angel Falls is a man? What else is a man? I'd always imagined the Angel Falls were named after their heavenly appearance, not after the yank who flew over them in a plane. No wonder Hugo Chavez wanted to change it, but they don't have another name!

Friday 14th November The Angel Falls in Venezuela is the highest waterfall in the world. It has a main drop of 807 m over the edge of Auyán-tepui, a table-top mountain. In total the water falls nearly 1000 m; over three times the height of the Eiffel Tower in France. The falls are named after the first confirmed westerner to discover the falls Jimmie Angel, and American pilot who flew over the falls in a small aircraft on 16th November 1933 and again 3 days later. Angel, his wife and two companions returned in 1939 and tried to land their plane at the top of the mountain. The wheels got stuck in the marshy ground and the four were forced to walk down (the other side of the mountain is sloped). It took them 11 days to walk back to civilisation and hearing about their adventure the president of Venezuela at the time named the falls for Jimmie. In 2003 the then Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez suggested the falls be given a different name, however the falls are so remote that there isn’t really a local name for the falls, even among the Pemon tribe who live near the falls, so the name remains. The falls are one of the top tourist attractions in Venezuela, despite visiting them being a 5 day journey from the capital Caracas, involving a flight, bus, hike and canoe up the Churrum & Carrao rivers. Thursday 13th November Happy 70th Birthday to actress Caryn Elaine Johnson. She is better known by her stage name, Whoopi Goldberg. She grew up in a Manhattan housing project with her mother who worked as a nurse and teacher. She faced poverty and struggled at school, perhaps due to her undiagnosed dyslexia and left school early. However, she gained a place at a theatre school in New York. She recalls being inspired by seeing Nichelle Nichols playing the role of Uhura on the original Star Trek TV series and being inspired. She shouted “Momma! There’s a Black lady on television and she ain’t no maid!” Years later she lobbied the producers of Star Trek: The Next Generation to create a role for her and she gained the role of wise bartender Guinan. The range of her acting talent is incredible. She has appeared in a long-running one-woman stage show, powerful dramas such as The Color Purple, and Ghost (for which she won an Oscar) and joyful comedy musicals such as Sister Act. She is one of only 27 artists to have completed the “grand slam of entertainment awards” the EGOT (an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony). At 70, she is still acting, writing books (including 7 children’s books) and is an activist for women's rights, LGBT rights and against cruelty to animals. What difference would an early diagnosis of Dyslexia have made to Whoopi? Why is representation on screen in prominent roles important? Do you see people like you on screen in big roles? Wednesday 12th November Have you heard of the two amazing British women who broke ultra-running world records last month? Sarah Webster (left) broke the women’s world record for distance covered in 24 hours at the world championship race in France. She ran 278.6 km (173 miles) in 24 hours of continuous running. It was only the second time she’d entered such as race, winning the UK event earlier this year. Three days later Sarah Perry (right) broke the women’s record for most laps in a Backyard Ultra race where competitors run 4.16 mile laps every hour until they can run no more. Perry ran 95 laps (395.8 miles) over nearly 4 days. Incredibly both Sarahs are amateur runners. 46-year-old Webster is a vet by day and 34-year-old Perry is a maths teacher. Do you enjoy running? What’s the furthest you’ve ever run? What challenges would Webster and Perry have had to overcome during their record breaking achievements? How do you think they balance training for such gruelling events alongside their jobs? Tuesday 11th November Kurt Vonnegut Jr. was born this day 1922 in Indianapolis and became one of the most original and influential writers of the 20th century. Known for his satirical style and science fiction themes, Vonnegut tackled big questions about war, technology, and what it means to be human. His time as a soldier in World War II was very influential. He was captured and held in a slaughterhouse in Dresden when it was bombed by the allies. He narrowly survived and the experience inspired his novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, which became a powerful anti-war statement. Over his career, Vonnegut wrote 14 novels, including Player Piano, Cat’s Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions, all filled with sharp wit and concern for humanity. Later in life, Vonnegut shared a story that revealed his unique way of seeing the world: one day, he told his wife he was going out to buy an envelope. She pointed out he could buy a box of 100 and save time. But Vonnegut wanted to walk to the local shop, to talk to people, to notice things. He called this “farting around,” and insisted that humans were “dancing animals”, meant to live life and experience every moment, not just rush through it. This story captures the heart of his writing; deep truths hidden in human experiences. Why did Vonnegut choose to walk to the shop instead of buying envelopes in bulk? Monday 10th November Ennio Morricone was born on 10th November 1928 in Rome, Italy. His father was a trumpeter and taught the young Ennio how to play and to read music. His teenage years were blighted by WWII and he used music as an escape from the chaos around him. He later trained in classical composition, but found his true calling in the world of film. Be began composing for Italian film, mostly comedies which he found simple. However his career changed when he moved to Hollywood to work his school friend Sergio Leone. Together they created a very distinctive score to Leone’s film A Fistful of Dollars and a new subgenre of film, the Spaghetti Western. Morricone went of to write the soundtracks for more than 500 movies and TV shows. Some, such as The Good, The Bad & The Ugly have become iconic. His music was innovative, incorporating sound effects such as whip cracks and gunshots into the music. His music was evocative and helped audiences feel the action before a single word was spoken. He won dozens of awards and kept composing up until his death in 2020 aged 91. What do you think of these pieces of music? How do they make you feel? Friday's TGT celebrates Science's most famous daughter Marie Curie. The first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and one of only 5 people to win two. A relatively familiar story, but on this Remembrance Weekend we look at her war work - and her pioneering of medical physics.

Friday 7th November Marie Curie (nee Skłodowska) was born in Warsaw on this day 1867. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and is still the only person ever to win in two different sciences: Physics and Chemistry. She and her French husband Pierre discovered the radioactive elements polonium and radium, laying the groundwork for modern nuclear physics and cancer treatment. Curie put her scientific knowledge to practical use during World War I. Realising that X-rays could help doctors locate bullets and broken bones, Curie invented mobile radiography units (later nicknamed ‘Little Curies’) and even personally drove them to the front lines. She trained over 150 women, including her daughter Irène, to operate these machines and run battlefield radiology stations, ultimately helping more than a million wounded soldiers. Despite her fame, Curie rejected glory and even offered up her gold Nobel medals to be melted down for the war effort. Marie’s relentless exposure to radiation came at a time when the dangers of radiation were not understood and they took their toll on her body. She died in 1934 from aplastic anaemia, a blood disease caused by radiation stopping her bone marrow from producing new blood cells. She left behind a legacy of scientific breakthrough, breaking new ground for female scientists and compassion for the wounded in war. The International Day of Medical Physics is celebrated on this day every year in her memory. What does it tell you about Marie that she even personally drove her ambulances to the front line, as well as inventing them? Friday 7th November Marie Curie (insert) was born this day 1867. Adolphe Sax was born on this day 1814 in Dinant, Belgium. He grew up in a musical world and both his parents made and redesigned musical instruments such as The French Horn. Adolphe joined the family business and had made two new versions of the flute and his own clarinet by the time he was 15. He set up his own instrument workshop in Paris in 1842 and worked on valved Bugles that were known as Saxhorns. He then turned his hand to invent a new instrument that would bridge the tonal gap between woodwind (e.g. clarinets) and brass (horns, trumpets). The Saxophone was patented in 1846 and had a single reed mouthpiece like woodwind, but a conical brass body like a horn. Together these features gave it a warm tone, but powerful projection (Watch: Nathan Graybeal play a Sax original) Sax’s new invention was popular but his success came at a price. Rival instrument makers sued him and sabotaged his work and even plotted to ruin his reputation. Some stole his designs and claimed them as their own. He won many of these battles, but the legal fights drained his money and his health. Despite the growth in popularity of saxophones Sax himself saw little of the profits. He spent much of his later life in and out of bankruptcy and died in poverty in 1894 relatively unknown. How do you think Sax felt seeing his invention gain in popularity but having no financial gain? What makes the saxophone different to other musical instruments? Wednesday 5th November Happy Birthday to actress and singer Keala Settle who turns 50 today! She was born in Hawaii to a Māori mother from New Zealand and a British father. Her mother was an R&B singer and Keala sees herself as an R&B singer first, too. However, she found early work in regional musical theatre and eventually made her way to Broadway. On Broadway she first performed in Prescilla… followed by Hardbody (earning a Tony nomination), Les Misérables, and Waitress. Her soulful voice and emotional power earned her respect in the theatre world. Her film breakthrough came in 2016 when she won the part of bearded lady Lettie Lutz in The Greatest Showman, where her emotional performance of “This is Me” in a cast read-through in front of producers helped get the project green-lit. “This is Me” won a Golden Globe for best original song and has become an anthem of pride in human difference and visibility throughout the world. Keala has since spoken openly about anxiety, body image, and resilience, becoming a role model for anyone who’s ever felt overlooked. Have you heard the song “This Is Me”? Tuesday 4th November n 1922 British archaeologist Howard Carter and his team were working in The Valley of the Kings in Egypt. On Sunday 4th November, under a pile of rubble and old archeologists huts, they found a hidden staircase and doorway. It lead to the tomb of the boy King Tutankhamun. The tomb had been sealed for 3000 years. The moment was extraordinary. Every Egyptian tomb discovered in modern history up to that point had been long plundered of its treasures. Tutankhamun’s tomb had remained hidden and thus was the first complete tomb and included Tutankhamun's gold funerary mask (insert). It was Carter’s final season in of excavation in and upon breaking through he famously and understatedly said, “Yes, wonderful things!”. The find sparked a worldwide craze sometimes called “Tutmania”. Images of gold masks, chariots, and painted walls captured the public imagination, revived the romance of ancient Egypt, and reshaped how we view archaeological treasures and the promise of buried riches unseen for thousands of years. The tomb of Tutankhamun and the reintroduction of the ancient world into the modern, changed popular culture forever. Can you imagine how Carter and his team felt when they found the tomb? Does archaeology appeal to you as a career or perhaps the study of ancient societies? The discovery made Tutankhamun a household name, despite a mere 10-year reign, 3300 years ago. What does his infamy tell us about society’s values and attitudes towards treasures? Monday 3rd November Happy Birthday to former professional footballer and TV pundit Ian Wright who turns 62 today. Ian and his two brothers were raised by his mother and an abusive step-father. He has often spoken of how a primary school teacher, Mr Pigden, was his first positive male role model in his life. Wright played Sunday League until he was 20 and struggled to make ends meet. He served a month in prison for unpaid driving fines and the experience left him determined to make it as a footballer and he doubled down his training on his release. He signed for non-league Greenwich when he was 20 and a season later signed a first professional contract with Crystal Palace. It was the start of a remarkable career that saw him score 239 goals in 501 club appearances, he won the Premier League and FA Cup twice with Arsenal. He also played for England 33 times scoring 9 goals. In his post playing career Wright has been a TV presenter and pundit. He has also been a vocal supporter of women’s football. Questions: Have you had a teacher or other adult who’s been an inspiration to you? Have you ever told them? Is there anything you can learn from Wright’s path to success? Tomorrow marks 150 years since the first performance of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in Boston, USA. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (pictured, left) was born in 1840 in St Petersburg and by 1875 was already a well known composer around the world thanks to his dramatic music. He wrote his first piano concerto with its famous opening chords in just a few weeks and had his friend Nikolai Rubinstein (right top) in mind as the pianist that would play it. However, when he showed it to him, Rubinstein called the piece ‘worthless’. Tchaikovsky was unbowed and believed in his work and showed it to the German pianist Hans von Bülow (right, bottom) who saw its brilliance and played it at the premiere at The Boston Music Hall. Preparations were also complicated by changing the conductor after Bülow fell out with the original choice. On the night the audience loved the concerto and unusually demanded that Bülow play the final movement again which surprised Tchaikovsky. Music critics in the audience were less impressed however, especially as the orchestra had made several mistakes due to lack of practice. However, the concerto is one of the most famous pieces in classical music and even Rubinstein came to appreciate it’s brilliance. How does this piece of music make you feel?
