This is the predictable result 24hr news channels abandoning reporting in favor of platforming roundtables of political consultants.

The "neurodiversity umbrella" is a concept that makes for interesting discussions, but to say an individual is neurodivergent tells you nothing about them. The umbrella is so broad as to virtually meaningless in describing a person.

Temple Grandin has also said that the autism spectrum is so broad that it doesn't make sense. She has said that it makes no sense to compare someone like herself with someone with severe autism. She is correct on this.

If your child has an IEP, you should insist on getting an aac eval from a qualified slp. Put pressure on your district to get this done. Professionals who are trained in both speech AND language delays are best suited to recommend the right aac tool and to develop goals for language development.

He said "overdevelopment" which is code for low income housing requirements.

She said that she doesn't need the 40 percent to win, and by the way, she's well positioned to make headway with Republicans. Next question. Seems kinda lame to try to make a gotcha from that response.

I've been listening to Elmo on repeat for a quarter century. Generally it's like white noise at this point but I do wish there was an occasional reprieve.

Was thinking the same thing. I have always thought that Trump's Fox interviews are the most revealing, and the same is true here. When they're not putting on a show of belittling perceived media adversaries, they are remarkably transparent.

He'll find a way to blame Biden in '26 too.

I keep hearing that parents are withholding aac from their kids and suggesting that they may become the next Hari Srinivasan if only they provided the right tools. It's startling how many supposed autism experts have no knowledge of what has been happening for the past 15 to 20 yrs.

I agree. My concern is that his BS evokes a visceral reaction of "acceptance" from many parents and advocates at the expense of any nuanced discussion on potential medical research or interventions.

Awesome. There are stories to tell here. I hope you'll consider seeking them out and platforming them.

You can call out rfk for his BS, while recognizing the need for more medical research. Is anyone talking about the high cooccurance of epilepsy with profound autism? More research in this area could lead to decreased risks to the health and safety of people like my son. Epilepsy is objectively bad.

There is also a crisis in care for adults with profound autism due to the lack of qualified DSPs.
September 23, 2025 at 12:57 PM
I thought you've challenged, if not rejected, the medical model of autism in favor of the social model. To me, this represents a misunderstanding, if not an outright dismissal, of the challenges associated with profound autism. How can we work in symphony with an outright rejection of either model?
September 8, 2025 at 11:16 AM
You are right of course. My point, and the point of this discussion is that from a mass communication standpoint, it is more effective to say "no child should go to bed hungry" than saying that food insecurity among children is an important problem that needs more attention.

"Hunger" means the same thing and is generously more effective and easily understood.

Absolutely 💯

Importantly, the author (in the comments section) suggests that the dollars spent on research on vaccines and autism would be better spent looking at the complex causes of autism, in addition to supports.
