In Chapel Hill-Carrboro, 883 students were absent on Tuesday. That’s 71% more than the 517 students who were absent on Thursday. Overall, 91.8% of students were in class on Tuesday. That’s compared to 95.2% on Thursday. Carrboro High School postponed CultureFest, an annual event in which students, staff and parents share their food traditions. The district said it will be held at a later date when all feel safe to attend and celebrate together. Gov. Josh Stein’s office responded to the letter Tuesday afternoon: “Local, well-trained law enforcement officers who live in and know their communities are best equipped to keep North Carolina neighborhoods safe, not military servicemembers,” said Stein’s spokesperson in response to Carolina Journal. “That is why Governor Stein has been working to expand our ranks of well-trained law enforcement officers. He has called on the General Assembly to fund his plan to extend raises and recruitment and retention bonuses to law enforcement and make investments in mental health to keep everyone safe.”
