Interestingly, this obsession isn’t limited to the right. In the 90s a prominent queer theorist argued that a passage in a Henry James novel where a character takes a dump was inherently queer and erotic despite no textual support for such interpretations. My earnest answer is that Paul of Tarsus (St Paul) imbued the west with an obsession with genitals—especially other people’s genitals. The current freakout about trans ppl is but the latest example. Other examples include purity culture, anti-masturbation rhetoric, anti-choice laws etc

It's a combo of perfect being the enemy of the good & laziness. The want to do this one neat trick and be done & not have to mess with it any more. It's the false equivalency that really gets me tho. Like yes, annoying procedural incrementalism is in fact preferable to extrajudicial killings.

also it amazes me that people take anything Trump does at face value anymore. Not in a "Trump is a genius playing 4D chess" kind of way, but in a "this guy is losing control of his mental faculties and was always a manipulative liar" kind of way

The 5th amendment is plain as day, “No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury”. This should result in disbarment
