Health is hard - we have to stop sugarcoating it. Literally: for food, exercise, wellbeing and everything else.

Helping humans to do hard things for their health.

#healthishard #healthprevention #exercise
Well, this is because academia is a Ponzi & pyramid scheme that simply is in itself anti-intellectual and non-scientific.

It needs a major overhaul of the whole process & mainly how publications (see that hit paper? :P) work.

Remove journals. Build a worldwide science platform.

So, this is promoting omega-3? Or just fat-biased food habits? Yes, I am aware of the MIND diet, but nowhere can I see data or evidence towards "specifically" sardines.

Why does it always have to be this "simplified" messaging of "just eat this one thing"?

It has not worked before & won't again

If you think that children are the only ones with issues around consumption of technology, I have a nice new phone to sell you.

I think this is at least an interesting idea to share educating & discovering shared problems across generations.

Accountable allocation of screen time is a great tool.
January 22, 2025 at 3:32 AM
Ha, longitudinal studies - you are dreaming, I like it 😉!

I think one problem is here that, especially for ADHD diagnosis, there is very little mention of standardising for video game usage (especially action games).

It is an amazing tool for engaging these children & helping them to get better.
January 22, 2025 at 3:30 AM
Damn, this is top-notch. Well done!

One question, because I like details:

The recommendation for being overweight/obese goes down significantly - why? I assume that has to do TDI, but I think it does not make sense. Especially, because you have a paragraph in there about high protein = good.
January 22, 2025 at 3:27 AM
Just to be clear, I am looking for a discussion about this.

What do you think? How come that all those "simpler" & "shorter" messages that clearly are more readily spread and known, are simply not working?

I think it is time to completely redo how we approach preventive health.
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
We have been working on this for a while. Partly through extremely thorough research of health perception data, self-assessments, as well as small pilot projects (to start proper investigation) like the one above.

Something is really wrong.

People's perception of health & fitness is screwed.

Try this:

Ask your students during their first lecture (two groups)
a) What they think 3x/wk moderate strength training with professional supervision would result in 6 months.
b) Second group, same for cardio.

Open-ended qualitative answers. Analyze before 2nd session, then discuss with them.
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
"Want to build a car? Just need some wheels, an engine & physics." = "150min moderate cardio/week
I call it:

Dilution of useful & clarified help.

Instead of simplifying we need to clarify more. What, how, when and why etc. It is WAY too complex to throw people under the bus like this. Yet...
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
Ironically, this is not just a communication problem. It is a major lack of understanding of psychology & behaviour of those making these guidelines.

No other industry does something this silly:

"Hey, if you want to bake a cake, you just need some flour and water" = "Do strength training 2x/week"
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
To look at this from another perspective: what do the "simple" messages/guidelines represent.

For the fitness professionals:
An entry point for health/fitness methods people can implement & successfully

For people:
The only things they need to do.

It is way too complex to do "more" by yourself.
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
If these simpler messages & guidelines were showing some promise we should be able to prove that from populational level data. -> Big no.

Ok, most people then criticize the implementation, but there are more health & fitness professionals than ever. -> another big no.

Surely, we can do better.
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
Over 2 decades of increased "simplification" of guidelines/recommendations/messages has only yielded worse outcomes year on year, over & over again - plus, it ain't stopping.

Yes, health & especially preventive health is a wicked problem, but with heaps more "data" available now, let's investigate.
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
Albeit, I used to agree with this, my main purpose in terms of content & discourse has become to start questioning pretty much what you wrote:

"... simplified message is needed..." - how sure are we about this?

From a practical point of view of health & fitness, it is looking very grim.
January 22, 2025 at 3:23 AM
More scientists, yay! 🥳

What is your experience & expertise on the games you mention?

Some previous work has highlighted a gamer bias for me where most of the "cute"-ish brain games have little effect, while proper fast-action video games are outrageously good:

Yes, but the question I would have:

Why community-operated?

Why put the responsibility of something this significant into unqualified, unprepared and unfunded groups or individuals?

We do have those professionals available (in most countries), and technically, could utilise them.
January 20, 2025 at 12:26 AM
Like with many things in #sportsscience & #exercisescience , it is just a tool. Mainly made for the general population, therefore might not be the most "fitting" for your sport. Plus, it depends on what you want from it.

Thus, I just find messaging that goes generalises training types instead of precise methods, problematic.

E.g. strength training for elderly is too simple messaging.

In practice, the best has been shown to be a combo of eccentric and power training.

Clarify, don't simplify.
January 19, 2025 at 7:45 PM
Obviously, I have to concur - it is absolutely underused & thought of "badly" in real-world scenarios.

Yet, I think that is a blanket problem for all ages & populations.

Children could literally 10x their benefits if we replaced sports & regular phys ed with strength & movement training.
January 19, 2025 at 7:43 PM
I can only agree 👏.

I worked with plenty of people with various chronic diseases, and it is always an extremely delicate situation. Plus, while regular people need some level of individualization, for sick people, it is way beyond what a regular "medical" professional can do.
January 19, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Haha, I am not sure what your research would have shown besides a lack of a successful academic career (as I mainly opted out of it).

Luckily, we have finally moved towards "more", earlier and specific exercise for chronic conditions. It used to be thought of as literally dangerous.

Wow, thanks so much for the shoutout!

I am not 100% sure how MedSky operates, but I am in the process of figuring out.

So true!

Yet, everyone only ever talks about shortcuts.
January 18, 2025 at 6:44 AM
QUICK BONUS:

All public guidelines (i.e. health, activity, prevention) have not changed at all for the last 20+ years.

Reports on adherence also continuously manipulated by countries, departments and organisations to make them look good.

All while leaving individual people without help 😕.
January 18, 2025 at 2:35 AM
TLDR:

The last 20+ years of health & fitness decline is due to the fact that something like "preventive" health has not been actioned.

Everything that could be done is up to every individual while feeding them lies that it is "easy", "short" & "simple".
